Ying-Cheng Lai

Professor of Electrical Engineering
Affiliated Professor of Physics
Fellow of the American Physical Society

Ying-Cheng Lai received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Optical Engineering from Zhejiang University in 1982 and 1985, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from University of Maryland at College Park in 1989 and 1992, respectively. He wrote his Ph.D. thesis on Classical and Quantum Chaos under Celso Grebogi and James A. Yorke . From 1992-1994 he was a post-doctoral fellow in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine under Raimond Winslow and Murray Sachs. He joined the University of Kansas in 1994 as an Assistant Professor of Physics and Mathematics and became Associate Professor in 1998. In August 1999, he came to Arizona State University as an Associate Professor in Departments of Mathematics and Electrical Engineering. He became full Professor of Electrical Engineering in August 2001.

Y.-C. Lai received an Air Force Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from the White House in 1997. In the same year, he also received a Faculty Career Award from the Physics Division of the National Science Foundation. He has authored and co-authored over 260 papers, with 230 in refereed journals. So far he has directed 10 Ph.D. and 20 Master theses and had 10 post-doctoral fellows. He currently has 1 post-doctoral fellow, 3 Ph.D. and 4 Master students. In the past five years, he gave over 50 invited seminars and colloquia all over the world. He has received over 3000 scientific citations.

In 1999, Y.-C. Lai was elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society with the citation: For his many contributions to the fundamentals of nonlinear dynamics and chaos.

Y.-C. Lai served as Program Chair of Statistical and Nonlinear Physics for the 2001 APS March Meeting.

Y.-C. Lai's main research interests are Chaotic Dynamics (classical and quantum, theory and experiments), Complex Networks, Biological Physics, and Signal Processing.
